Bum Gravy Sunday...

I always reckoned Supergrass nicked the riff for Richard III from this...it's the B side of the double A side single, and quite possibly the most commercial thing Bum Gravy ever did...

Bum Gravy: Super M

As I understand it, there are two theories about Alice Coltrane...

a) she channeled the spirit of dead husband and jazz genius John from beyond the grave, allowing him to create masterpieces posthumously, and

b) she was driven insane by the loss and the music helped the denial, a jazz-balm for her existential pain (ie she was mad as fuck)

I know where my money is. This track is some sort of reworking of John's signature tune and starts off sensibly enough (well, for a jazz track) - and then the billowing clouds of string descend, some kind of crazy mixed up meettyfoour...I don't think it's the maddest of her tunes, it's quite accessible in fact, but it does seem to illustrate well the idea that all was not well...

mmm...nice?...

So today we are going to be talking about jazz. Do you get jazz? I'm not sure that I do...I will happily listen to Bum Gravy, or TG, or any of the industrial noise merchants; I have played the Eraserhead soundtrack - for fun. I'll defend Metal Machine Music, hum Sister Ray from begining to end, even (if pushed) listen to the sound of my own whiny voice, but I can't get more than half way through this...bet you a metaphorical Euro you can't either:

The Magnificat two...

I came across Arvo Pärt via Jon, and then was prompted to actually *listen* to some when Bill Drummond said Pärt was the only thing he listened to these days (and if it's good enough for Kingboy D...).

As you may have noticed, I've been on a bit of a classical run for the last day or two (prompted by the Paul Morley book) so this fits in as well as being rather beautiful.

space is deep...

words and music

I'm reading words and music by Paul Morley, a book about Kylie and Can and Throbbing Gristle, Missy Elliot and Mozart, Xtina and Christina and christ knows what else...it's a rambling, subjective road movie of a book and references a lot I want to go back and listen to again so I guess that a lot of the stuff here will reflect a lot of the stuff there until it's over...just be grateful the ftp was playing up and instead of the planned 17mb of Tangerine Dream, you have this little piece of the sublime instead...
